Well...I went outside right after the sun went down and the world looked pretty dismal. I walked around to my back yard and discovered this flower growing in my lawn. Pretty cute, but not so great growing in my lawn. The flower was about 12" from the grass, I stood over it, used my lens at 85mm focal length (zoomed out as far as my lens would go) and set my camera to f-5.6. It was too dark so I had to set my ISO to 1600 so that I could handhold the camera. Even then my shutter speed was 1/30th of a second and a few of my shots were slightly blurry. So, what you see in the background is the very blurry grass and dirt. It would not have been this blurry if I had not zoomed in with my lens. A longer focal length helps achieve a shallower depth of field.

I then picked one of these cute flowers growing out of my sad lawn and set it on top of the fence. I rested my camera on the fence and focused on the flower and made sure my f-stop was as low as I could get it...which was f-5.6. I shot it at 1/80th of a second still on ISO 1600. The image turned out how I hoped it would, but I kind of wish I had remembered to put my ISO back down to 100. I had the fence to rest the camera on so I could have had a longer exposure. I think the grainyness (or pixalization) softens the image in a cool way, but I would have liked to see it a little crisper. Maybe I will try again tomorrow.

Those are great shots! I love the mini lessons you give when you write about the shot - I read both of them several times and made mental notes!!! Keep it up!
I love the one on the fence! Looks great and makes me wish I had flowers--and a good knowledge of the settings. But I guess this is what this group is for--I am learning, slowly, but learning!
i'm w/leslie! love the mini lessons and loved te pix too. great job.
Love it! Thanks for making me have to really think when I read a post! :)
